CHAPTER 11

After their discovery, Miranda had to call her mother. She didn’t know the first thing about slimy, magical black goo, so she thought it was probably the perfect time to consult with the expert. She used a video call to show her what they’d found and ask what they should do.

“Photograph it,” Eve instructed. “You can poke at it with a stick if you want to check it out. There may be more clues buried in it, so it never hurts to check.” She could see that her mom sitting in her chair at home, relaxing. “If it left that behind, more than likely it will deteriorate quickly. Probably didn’t expect you to find it.”

“Should I put it in something?” Miranda asked, not really wanting to.

“Tell her how you found it,” Jesse insisted from behind her.

“What did he say?” Eve asked.

“Nothing, he’s just talking,” Miranda said quickly. She didn’t want to tell her mom what had happened when it might not mean anything. Sure, it was odd how she’d walked almost straight to it, plus the goosebumps. But there was no concrete evidence that showed it wasn’t accidental.

She could have just happened to get the chills and accidently ran across the residue or whatever it was. That didn’t mean anything. Besides, there was plenty of time to worry about that stuff later.

“No, you don’t need to take it,” Eve said shaking her head. “I’d say that whatever is taking people can transform. Like a shapeshifter, but different. I dealt with a striga once, and it left residue exactly like that behind.”

“Is that what you think it is?” Miranda asked.

“Hard to say,” Eve shrugged. “They’re pretty few and far between. The one I dealt with wasn’t stealing people like this. It was a whole different scenario with babies and well… we won’t get into that. I’d go look at the other recent locations that people were taken from and see if something similar is nearby. Have you found anything else?”

“Jesse says the magic is powerful and bitter. Whoever it is, also has quite a bit of sadness in them,” Miranda explained.

“And what does that tell you?” Eve asked.

“That if I find more things like this at the recent disappearance sites, then they’re linked.” Miranda felt proud that she’d started making some headway.

“Exactly. I think you’re probably going to be able to figure out what’s doing this. If you need anything else, let me know,” Eve said.

“Okay,” Miranda nodded. “Will do.” She hung up with her mother and turned to look at Jesse, who was scowling.

“Why didn’t you tell her how you followed the magic?” he asked.

“Because I’m not so sure I did,” Miranda said. “Besides, I have other things to worry about right now. Like finding the missing people and making sure no one else gets taken. This isn’t something normal police will be able to handle. That means I have to stop this before anyone else disappears or gets hurt. The police wouldn’t know the first thing about how to stop this, and if they tried, more people could get hurt.
